Key of Description Codes

Shown below is the Key of Description Codes used in many of our files for reproductions of photographs.  Sometimes the copy was made from original negatives or various types of original or copy photographs.  The first letter gives the method of photograph, or the type of photograph.  The next letters give the type of photograph.  The next letter is ot used in portraits, only architectural or landscape photograph.  The next letters give detail about the photograph and the + or - indicate the quality of the photograph.  All letters are not used in most cases, only those that apply.
Method of Photography:
            T = Tintype
            A = Ambrotype
            V = Carte-de-vista
            C = Cabinet
            P = Postcard
            Y = Made from a copy
 
Type of Portrait:
            S = Single Portrait
            D = Couple
            F = Family or other group
            H = School or church group

            G = Full length
            & = Head & shoulder or half length

           M = Formal
            X = Casual
 
Primarily Non-Portrait Photographs:
            L = Landscape
            B = Building or Architectural Setting
 
Photograph Detail:
            I = Interior Photograph
            E = Exterior Photograph
 
            U = Taken at a Photography Studio
 
            R = Probably Professionally Done
            N = Snapshot or amateur Photograph
 
            + = Good Quality Photograph
            - = Less Than Good Quality Photograph
